The Best of the 10th Annual San Antonio Breast Cancer Conference Conclusion

The Best of the 10th Annual San Antonio Breast Cancer Conference organized by the Ministry of National Guard - Health Affairs and represented by the Department of Adult Oncology at King Abdulaziz Medical City - Jaddah (KAMC) to discuss the most recent and vital developments of the San Antonio Breast Cancer Conference activities were concluded . The conference was held in collaboration with the organizing committee of San Antonio Breast Cancer Conference at Park Hyatt Hotel – Jeddah with the participation of specialized doctors from all over the world and the participation the of the organizing committee Head of San Antonio Breast Cancer Conference and its members, in addition to 50  prominent research presenters in breast cancer diagnosis. The conference covered  the most recent and important scientific research in surgical, chemical, biological, immunological, hormonal and radiological cancer treatments, such treatments work on improving cancer patient care and reaching a mechanism involving treatment plans that are suitable with cancer patient throughout the Arab world. In addition to explaining breast cancer prevalence, its causes, the best ways to diagnose it, ways to prevent it and the way to properly handle the registered cases.

During the conference, a number of research papers submitted from the Gulf region and the Middle East were covered. Such activity created a platform for researches to contribute in improving the health education concept and present huge prospects for researchers to conduct more research in the field of breast cancer.

Additionally, The number of research papers discusses were up to 30 papers covering the latest updates in breast cancer including a paper by Oncology Consultant at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center - Riyadh Dr. Tahir Tuwaijri, in which he reviewed the Gulf Research Center, where they focused their initial research   on patients who suffer from advanced cases of breast cancer. Dr. Tahir explained that this group of patients have tumors with an average size of 7 cm,  which is considered a huge size in comparison with the other cases in European countries. He add that the treatment plan entailed 6 doses of chemotherapy in addition to following a diet plan.. He also add that the tumors have been removed after the treatment period, followed by the radiotherapy. Last but not least, Dr. Tuwaijri mentioned that this treatment experience had a success record  of increasing the survival rates  for up to five years by 92%, which was between 70% to 75% in the past.

On another note, Professor and Head of the Oncology Department at the University of Alexandria Dr. Alaa Gndeel, delivered  a speech in which he pointed out the role San Antonio Conference in the treatments developments in the field  of breast cancer. He added, this year summarizes all the contributions presented by San Antonio related to the Middle East region. Dr. Alaa had three participations in this conference one of which was focusing the importance of detecting cancerous cells in breast cancer patient’s blood, and the treatment of those cells plays a huge role in the treatment of  breast cancer tumors.

From another side, a participation from Qatar by Sidra Medical and Research Center represented by the General Manager of the unit of immune tumors Dr. David ….. . The doctor paper was about the immune cells role in preventing breast cancer. Through analyzing almost 1000 case, it become clear that immune cells does not respond quickly agaist tumors due to some of the genes that discourage its work. The recommendation of his worksheet are working in stimulate immune cells by fixing the genetic deformity in the patient who suffer from breast cancer. Dr. David add that Sidra Medical and Research Center considered an academic and medical center works according to the latest discovery by science about digital systems to set new standards to provide care for women and children in Qatar and the Gulf region and the world.

Moreover, Dr. Omalkhair Abualkhair, Head of the conference Scientific Committee  and Head of the Scientific Committee for Breast Research - King Abdullah International Medical Research Center confirmd that there is a noticeable increase in the numbers of breast cancer cases by 1600 case, and breast cancer represents 25% of cancer types. In addition, 14 out of every 100,000 women, suffer from breast cancer around the age of 48 years. She explain that 48% of the cases were diagnosed in the second or third stage,  but only 2% inthe first stage. She add that the concept of education and awareness starts at an early age due to the importance of self-examination and enough knowledge about this disease, and awareness plans should be set all year long starting with the importance of early detection. Finally, Dr. Abualkhair pointed that breast cancer has many causes like gender (women more than men), age, hormones, genetics, not exposing to enough sunligh at an early age and obesity.

At the end of the activities, speakers and researchers were honored , and Dr. Tahir Tuwaijri, Oncology Consultant at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center - Riyadh received the  best scientific research paper award.  Last but not least, all participating parties were also honored for their efforts and participation in this conference.
