Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign at King Abdulaziz Medical City – Jeddah
Ministry of National Guard-Health Affairs (MNG-HA) represented by Princess Noorah Oncology Center (PNOC) at King Abdulaziz Medical City – Jeddah launched the breast cancer awareness campaign which will last until the 31st of October 2017 under the slogan "Prevention is the Objective". Breast Cancer Consultant and Head of the Scientific Committee, Dr. Meteb AlFheidi pointed out that (PNOC) has started its awareness campaign for this disease early as well the event started by organizing awareness exhibition in the outpatient center at King Abdulaziz Medical City in which the relevant authorities participated.
Moreover, Dr. AlFheidi explained that awareness means early detection by following medical advice and guidance which urge a monthly breast self-examination, clinical examination, and an annual Mammogram after the age of 40. This will familiarize the women with the status of her breasts so she can notice any changes, along with keeping a healthy lifestyle to maintain an ideal body weight through nutrition and regular exercise.
Additionally, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women according to the 2013 Saudi Cancer Registry. Dr. AlFheidi pointed out that the number of registered cases reached 1853 case of breast cancer by 16%, but it represents 29% of all women with cancer in general, and the average age is 50. The distribution of breast cancer stages at diagnosis varies, as stage 1 and 2 make up 33%, stage 3 with 42% and 13% for stage 4. These statistics conclude that the diagnosis of the breast tumor in its 3rd and 4th stage is relatively high. Dr. AlFheidi also added that breast cancer factors are age, genes less than 10%, hormonal treatments for long periods, weights, and unhealthy nutrition.
Last but not least, on behalf of Executive Director of Medical Services at MNG-HA/Western Region, Dr. Esam Al Zmaiti said that MNG-HA through its treatment, academic, research and preventive programs aims to achieve a unique integration that promotes patient service to the highest professional standards. Also, the annual campaign of breast cancer aims to identify types of breast cancer, methods of self-examination, prevention of disease, breast cancer symptoms, signs and causes, factors leading to increased risk of disease, follow-up methods with the physician after the course of treatment, the importance of Mammogram screening, correcting misconceptions about this disease and the importance of regular exercise and maintaining an ideal weight.
