Division of Geriatric Medicine

Geriatric Medicine


The Geriatric Medicine Division was established in January 2006. The division provides the outmost care for the elderly patients who need continuity of comprehensive care to promote function and maintain independence as well as family and community reintegration.

Provision of Geriatric Medicine includes diagnosis, management and prevention. These services cover:

  • Geriatric Medicine

  • Transitional Care

  • Long Term Care

  • Supervision of the KAMC-Riyadh long-term patients at Specialize Medical Center (SMC) and chronic ventilated patients housed in Riyadh Care Hospital (RCH).

The diagnostic and therapeutic services will be of the highest standards using Evidence Based approach at all times.

An important aspect of the services to be provided will include training the medical staff to the highest standards.

Essential aspects of the scope of service include:

  • Health education to the patients.

  • Patient-centered approach.

  • Patient safety and satisfaction orientation.

Scope of Service:

The Division of Geriatric Medicine provides the care of geriatric patients of King Abdulaziz Medical City for inpatient. The goal of this service is to promote function and maintain independence of the elderly. The division has established referral guidelines to Geriatric Medicine. The patients who are candidate for consultation and possible transfer to the Geriatric Unit (Ward 25) should be (65) years and older who is functionally independent or partially dependent and suffering from one or more of the following:

  • Cognitive impairment (dementia, delirium, or combination)

  • Recurrent fall, poor mobility and balance.

  • Poly-pharmacy

  • Malnutrition and unexplained weight loss

  • Pressure ulcer and skin breakdown

  • Unexplained or acute functional decline.

  • Failure to thrive.

  • Multiple and/or complex medical illness with functional decline.

  • Management of chronic pain.

In addition, the Division provides the following services:

  • Transitional Care Services:

    • The division provides transitional care for patients who are medically stable and requires prolonged stay in the hospital for medical reasons (e.g. I.V. antibiotic, Geriatric Rehab, infected bed sores etc.)

    • Patient on chronic mechanical ventilation.

  • Long Term Care Services:

    • Medically stable patients who require only basic medical and nursing care and fall under the category of Long Term Care Services will be seen and evaluated by the Physical and Geriatric Medicine team. Those patients should be in the following condition:

      • Vegetative stage

      • Permanent tracheostomy

      • Lacking of socioeconomic support

      • Long-standing bedridden patients

    • Once the patient met the criteria, a transfer to Long Term Care Center in a private institution will be arranged and supervised by the PGM team. The assessment of the below-listed departments should be made before considering referrals to Long Term Care Services:

      • Social Services

      • Clinical Coordinator

      • Discharge Planning

      • Inpatient Services

Ward 25: 15 beds

Statistical Data:

  • Outpatient Clinics

    • Geriatric Medicine - two (2) clinics per week

    • Dementia Clinic once per week

    • Medical Protocol Clinic once per month
