Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine

The Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) is a large and modern medical laboratory recognized by different well-known accreditation bodies such as the Joint Commission International Accreditation (JCIA), College of American Pathologists (CAP), the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), Saudi Central Board for Accreditation of Healthcare Institutes (CBAHI), Interna​​tional Organization for Standardization (ISO-15189 and ISO-17025), American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI), and Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT). DPLM maintained its accreditation over the years.​

Department Capacity

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine supports the King Abdulaziz Medical City and King Abdullah Specialist Children's Hospital laboratory in Riyadh.

It provides selected laboratory services to other regional hospitals, including King Abdulaziz Medical City, Jeddah, King Abdulaziz Hospital, Al Hasa, Al Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal Hospital, Dammam, and many primary healthcare clinics and polyclinics located throughout the Kingdom. 

The DPLM operations include the Central Laboratory, Blood Bank and Blood Component Lab in the main hospital, and Blood Donor Center. 

Recently, Health Affairs approved officially establishing the Central Laboratory as a Reference Laboratory to provide needed pathology and laboratory services to ALL facilities across the regions.

Scope of Services

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is composed of different sections:

  • Anatomic Pathology: Histology, Cytology and Electron Microscopy.

  • Clinical Chemistry: Automated General Chemistry, Automated Hormone, Manual Special Chemistry, and Therapeutic Drug Monitoring.

  • Hematology: Routine Hematology, Special Hematology and Body Fluids, Coagulation, and Flow Cytometry and Molecular Pathology tests.

  • Immunopathology: Serology, Histocompatibility, and Flow Cytometry.

  • Microbiology: Bacteriology, Virology, AFB-Mycology, Parasitology and Environmental.

  • Molecular Pathology and Genetics: Clinical Cytogenetics and Molecular Pathology.

  • Point of Care Testing.

  • Pre-analytical Testing: Specimen Collection, Receiving and Processing.

  • Toxicology.

  • Transfusion Medicine Services: Donor Center with an Apheresis Unit, Component Processing and Transfusion Services.

  • Lab Quality Management.

  • Lab Safety.

  • Lab Education and Training.
