Neurosurgery Division

The Neurosurgery Division at King Abdulaziz Medical City (KAMC) have developed rapidly since the establishment of this hospital in 1983. Currently, we have a team composed of ten full-time world-class neurosurgeons; four of them are devoted to pediatric neurosurgery practice at King Abdullah Specialized Children Hospital (KASCH). In addition, there are eight certified neurosurgeons in the capacity of associate and assistant neurosurgeons.

The newly opened KASCH is a landmark project devoted to pediatric medical specialties in our country. The hospital provides a unique experience for our residents to work with our pediatric neurosurgery team. Congenital pathology and pediatric tumors are routinely operated on in a well-equipped center.

Our staff is also included in the world-famous team for separating Siamese twins established in 1998. Undoubtfully, the focus on the pediatric age group in this neurosurgical rotation is a quality experience.

Neurosurgery Division Capacity

The neurosurgery service at KAMC has five rooms/week of full-day list allocated for elective neurosurgery practice. In addition, two operating rooms are available 24/7 for trauma cases. This is in addition to the developing facilities for pediatric neurosurgery in the newly opened KASCH.

The operating rooms are highly equipped with the state of the art equipment like microscopes, navigation systems, O-arm, and mobile CT. The service is not short of any equipment or implants needed to improve the safety and outcome of the surgical procedures. Many Specialized neurosurgical procedures have increased over the five years. Currently, we do more than 750 cases/year.

Neurosurgery Division of Services

The neurosurgery service includes focused practice in many sub-specialty fields. Starting with neurotrauma, the primary signature of our neurosurgery training, Our residents will have excellent experience in the medical and surgical management of all types of head injuries. KAMC contributes to many world-class clinical trials and research in trauma management, including head injury.

In addition, our center's management of acute spinal cord injuries and spinal fractures is routinely practiced. Besides the neurotrauma, the neurosurgery service enjoys practicing and teaching the usual bread and butter cases in neurosurgery. This includes degenerative disc disease and peripheral nerve cases.

On the other hand, advanced neuro-oncology and skull base surgery cases are operated in our center thanks to our staff's sub-specialization in this field. The practice uses high-quality intraoperative tools and neurophysiology monitoring devices. Vascular neurosurgery cases are managed in our center following the highest international standards using world-class diagnostic and interventional neuroradiology services.

Complex spinal neurosurgery procedures are done on almost a weekly basis. Top spinal neurosurgeons in town are included in our team. The epilepsy program is well-established at KAMC. Many cases are monitored in our EMU and conferenced on a routine basis. Procedures like invasive monitoring, anterior temporal lobectomies, lesionectomy, and hemispherectomy are routinely operated in our epilepsy program.

Other stereotactic and functional neurosurgery procedures like surgery for movement disorders have already started thanks to the keen team of well-trained and experienced neurology and neurosurgery members.
