Pediatric Gastroenterology Fellowship Training Program

We are pleased to present a concise Introduction for our accredited fellowship program by the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties. Our program belongs to The Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition Division at King Abdulaziz Medical City, Ministry of National Guard Health Affairs in Riyadh. The Division is well-developed, broad-based services in Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatobiliary Diseases, Nutrition and liver transplant as well as Post bowel transplant patient care in infants, children and adolescents. It was established since 1998 .The division is under the Department of Pediatrics.

In Keeping with the fellows’ background in pediatrics, the program will emphasize the acquisition of knowledge clinical and technical skills, and attitudes in areas of greater relevance to the appropriate age group. On successful completion of the training program trainees will demonstrate competence in the areas of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition. Trainee will get competence skills in endoscopy, colonoscopy and its related techniques.

Our division perform a minimum of 200 procedures per year .we insure endoscopic competence for all the trainee.

Our program facilitate and help fellows to get an experience in basic and/or clinical research that should provide them a training in experimental design , statistics , interpretation of data , oral and written presentation , research ethics and preparation of grant applications.

Our program concentrates on the communication, attitudes / professional skills to ensure ability to work in harmony with other allied healthcare personnel.

The program requires a three (3) years of training , Program structure will be spent as follows :

The First year will be spent as follows:

  • 6 months in pediatric gastroenterology.

  • 2 months in adult endoscopy unit.

  • 1 month in inborn errors of metabolism.

  • 1 month pathology

  • 1 month radiology

  • 1 month vacation

The second year will be spent as follows:

  • 6 months in pediatric gastroenterology

  • 2 month in liver transplant program

  • 1 month research

  • 2 month in adult endoscopy unit

  • 1 month in vacation

The third year will be spent as follows:

  • 6 months in pediatric gastroenterology

  • 2 month elective

  • 1 month in nutrition services

  • 2 month research

  • 1 month Vacation

Fellows will be observed and monitor by the program director on a regular basis, they will be on a regular and scheduled weekly activity.

Evaluation criteria, promotion, and admission to the examination and certification will be as per regulation of the Saudi commission for Health specialties .

Upon completion of the training and passing the final examination , our graduate can be licensed and work  as a consultant gastroenterologist .
