Anatomic Pathology Program

​The program is under the department of pathology and laboratory medicine, division of anatomic pathology.


The duration of the program is five years.

Aim of the program: To train and deliver competent Anatomic Pathologists to meet the great demand in the kingdom.

Program outcomes:

  • The principal objective of training in Anatomical Pathology is to develop skills that would enable the graduate to function as an independent specialist, i.e., handle and interpret submitted tissue and cytology material efficiently and accurately.
  • Upon completion of the training, the candidate is legible to take the following board and certificate examinations:
    • Saudi Board in Anatomic Pathology.
    • Arab Board of Pathology.
    • King Saud University Fellowship in Pathology (Histopathology).
    • Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath).

Overview of training levels:

It is a five years training program under the umbrella of the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties. Residents are required to do rotations in four major hospitals in Riyadh. King Abdulaziz Medical City (KAMC), King Khaled University Hospital (KKUH), King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center (KFSH & RC), Prince Sultan Military Medical City (PSMMC), and King Fahad Medical City (KFMC). The duration of rotation in each center is one to one and a half years, divided into six months rotations that can be done anytime during the five-year program.

The Five Year Training Program

Academic activities in the program:

  • The following educational activities are provided during the training:
    • Basic lecture course for R1 residents in the academic half-day.
    • Journal club.
    • Case Presentation.
    • Daily microscope slide teaching session.
    • Regional pathology club meeting.
  • Residents are supposed to participate in journal club discussions, case presentations, basic lecture courses, and regional pathology cub meetings.
  • Residents are required to attend at least 75% of all the educational activities.
  • Residents are encouraged to present at least once a year at local, national, or international pathology meetings.
  • Residents are encouraged to participate in research activities, including write articles, abstracts, and case reports.
