Family Medicine Residency Training Program

Duration : Four years

Aim of the program:

To produce fully competent family physicians capable of providing high quality healthcare to their patients and the community through broad-based learning.

Program outcome :

The outcome is based on the following competencies:

Domain One: Primary Care Management

  • To manage primary contact with patients, dealing with unselected problems.

  • To cover the full range of health conditions

  • To coordinate care with other professionals in primary care and with other specialist

  • To master effective and appropriate care provision and health service utilization

  • To make available to the patient the appropriate services within the healthcare system

  • To act as an advocate for the patients

Domain Two: Person Centered Care

  • To adopt a person-centered approach in dealing with patients and their problems, in the context of the patient’s circumstances

  • To use the consultation to bring about an effective doctor–patient relationship, while respecting the patient’s autonomy.

  • To communicate, to set priorities and to act in partnership with the patient.

  • To provide long-term continuity of care and coordinated care management, as determined by the needs of the patient.

Domain Three: Specific Problem Solving Skills

  • To relate specific decision-making processes to the prevalence and incidence of illness in the community

  • To selectively gather and interpret information from history-taking, physical examination and investigations, and to apply that information to an appropriate management plan in collaboration with the patient.

  • To adopt appropriate working principles (e.g. incremental investigation, using time as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool) and to tolerate uncertainty.

  • To intervene urgently when necessary

  • To manage conditions that may present early and in an undifferentiated way manner.

  • To make effective and efficient use of diagnostic and therapeutic interventions.

Domain Four: Comprehensive Approach

  • To manage simultaneously multiple complaints and pathologies, both acute and chronic health problems.

  • To promote health and wellbeing by applying appropriately health promotion and disease prevention strategies.

  • To manage and coordinate health promotion, prevention, cure, care, rehabilitation and palliation.

Domain Five: Community Orientation

  • To reconcile the health needs of individual patients and the health needs of the community in which they live, balancing these with available resources.

Domain Six: Holistic Approach

  • To use bio-psycho-social models, taking into account cultural and existential dimensions.

Type of qualification :

After successful completion of the program, the candidate will be eligible to set for the final written and clinical exam of Saudi and Arab Board in Family Medicine.

Overview of training levels:

  • First year : start with Introductory Course for one month followed by family Medicine rotation for 3 months then start rotation in the hospital for major specialties (Internal Medicine/OB-Gyne/ Pedia /General Surgery/ Ortho / ER)

  • Second year : continue hospital rotation (PEDS-ER/ Radiology/ ER) plus Family Medicine rotation for 3 months and research block for six weeks

  • Third year : will take hospital rotation (Derma / ENT / OPTHA/ Psychiatry / Elective) plus 3 months rotation in Family Medicine and six weeks block of Advance Course.

  • Fourth Year : FM rotation

Academic activities in the program:

- Introductory Course : one month given to R1 in first month of academic year

- Half Day Released Course (HDRC) : weekly meeting for all residents for presentation and discussion of different clinical and non-clinical topics with various format (didactic lectures /Role Play/ Case Discussion / Data and Slides Interpretation ..etc.)

- Clinical Tutorials : tutorial session done as part of the Family Medicine rotation

- Journal Club : monthly meeting with selected article for appraisal for all residents

- Research : six weeks block of research fundamentals followed by filed work to produce a research as prerequisite to set or the final exam

- Exam. Preparatory Course:

  • Preparatory course for Part one exam done for R2 (one session/week ) for 10 weeks for MCQ mock exam and discussion

  • Preparatory course for final written exam for R4: One week intensive course

  • Preparatory course for final Clinical exam for R4: One week intensive course

- Meeting with Program admin :Twice per year for open discussion/ feedback / new idea for improvements , planning for next year
