King Abdulaziz Medical City - Riyadh, Saudi Arabia is First Cellular Therapy Program in Saudi Arabia to Earn FACT

In a major breakthrough, the stem cell transplantation program at King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh received the quality accreditation of the international organization FACT (Foundation for The Accreditation of Cellular Therapy) in July 2022.

This recognition includes the stem cell transplantation program (adult and children stem cell transplantation), the peripheral or bone marrow stem cell collection center, and the stem cells processing at the center's advanced laboratories.

The FACT accreditation is an international, evidence-based reference to best practices established by the International Societies for Stem Cell and Genetics Therapy and Organ Transplantation. Centers that are seeking accreditation undergo comprehensive evaluations to ensure high-quality medical and laboratory standards in cellular therapy. Only a few medical centers outside of North America have been accredited, and King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh is the first center in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Middle East to earn this accreditation.

This achievement underscores the Ministry of National Guard Health Affairs' commitment to clinical excellence through highly skilled staff, critical infrastructure, and a robust system to ensure the best quality of care and outcomes for patients. Saudi Center for Medical Laboratories ISO 15189

The Ministry of National Guards Health Affairs hospital in Madinah, Prince Mohammed Bin Abdulaziz Hospital, has achieved a new national accomplishment by obtaining the accreditation of the Saudi Center for Medical Laboratories ISO 15189 as the first medical laboratory within the Kingdom to be accredited in the government sector.

This accreditation is concerned with conformity assessment to clarify the requirements of medical laboratories' accreditation to validate their services and improve their ability to provide accurate and guaranteed results in addition to verifying their technical efficiency, which is the primary criterion for medical laboratories at the international accreditation bodies. It also contributes to exchanging laboratory results between different authorities.

This accreditation, which is granted for the first time by the Saudi Accreditation Center, came after verifying the efficiency of the technical and administrative staff, the availability of adequate procedures for quality control, the existence of appropriate sampling practices, the availability of equipment, and the appropriate environment for testing following the highest medical standards in this field.

Mr. Abdulaziz Al-Juhani, Director of the Laboratories Department, commented: "Praise is to Allah for this achievement which further affirms the administrative staff efforts and the usual support of the hospital leadership. It is our pleasure to attain this accreditation, which asserts PMBAH's Laboratory eagerness to hold up local and international achievement".

The Executive Director of Medical Services at Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz Hospital, Dr. Turki Al-Wasidi, praised the continuous excellence and relentless efforts of all health cadres at the Laboratory Services Department to provide the highest quality of medical services and their adherence to the international Quality & Patient Safety standards, which will be positively reflected on the provided healthcare services at Prince Mohammed Bin Abdulaziz Hospital.

Further, the Executive Director of Operations at Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz Hospital, Mr. Mansour Bin Nasser Al Askar, pointed out that this achievement comes as the result of the development plans implemented by the hospital departments providing the optimum quality of provided services by enforcing the highest international scientific standards approved in various fields, noting that Operations and Medical Services Departments at Prince Hospital Mohammed Bin Abdulaziz in Madinah are collaborating to utilize distinguished specialized technical cadres with advanced international technologies to provide the best-integrated health care for our patients.

The Department of Medical Laboratories at Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz Hospital has achieved many national & international achievements, the most important of which is being listed as one of the top 20 laboratories around the world after obtaining international A2LA accreditation in all its laboratory services and obtaining the ISO 15189 certificate, and achieving the accreditation of the American College of Pathology CAP and the Joint Commission International for Accreditation of Health Organizations (JCI), in addition to the Saudi Center for Accreditation of Health Institutions (CBAHI) and the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB).

HIMSS INFRAstructure Adoption Model (INFRAM) - Stage 7

The Ministry of National Guard Health Affairs - King Abdulaziz Medical City has achieved the HIMSS Infrastructure Adoption Model (INFRAM) - Stage 7 on Wednesday, May 11, 2022 AD 10 Shawwal 1443 AH, being the second organization in the world to achieve this high-level of IT infrastructure maturity in healthcare.

This accreditation signifies the commitment of the Ministry of National Guard Health Affairs to apply the best practices with regard to IT Infrastructure in terms of data networks, wireless networks, communications, collaborations, cyber security and data center.

On this occasion, His Excellency Dr. Bandar Al Knawy, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of National Guard Health Affairs, has highlighted that “through the digital transformation journey, MNGHA continues to employ the latest technologies to achieve the highest level of patient safety and quality care to provide optimal healthcare services to all MNGHA patients". Additionally, His Excellency extended his appreciation to His Royal Highness Prince Abdullah bin Bandar, the Minister of National Guard, for his continuous support to achieve the organization's strategic goals of MNGHA, towards reaching this high-level of digital earning the accreditation.

The IT Infrastructure Adoption Model INFRAM is an international eight stage (0-7) model for IT technology infrastructure adoption and maturity, to assist healthcare organizations in the process of evaluating and advancing the digital transformation forward.

Stage 7 of INFRAM is the highest level in this maturity model, offered by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), which is concerned with raising the level of digital maturity at healthcare organizations around the world.

Adoption Model of Analytics Maturity (AMAM) - Stage 7

King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh at the Ministry of National Guard Health Affairs achieved the Adoption Model of Analytics Maturity (AMAM) - Stage 7, on Tuesday 23 Muharram 1443 AH / August 31, 2021 AD.

The AMAM maturity model measures analytics capabilities on several elements: first, analytical capabilities in healthcare institutions in terms of tools, technical infrastructure, and qualified human resources; second, verifying the existence of a robust and effective data and analytics strategy that is compatible with the objectives of the institution; third, the institution's dependence on strong and effective data and analytical services in its operations, decision making, and plans. The model of maturity also provides a blueprint for the transformation into a data-driven organization (DDO) that relies on data to make its decisions, improve its operations, and predict its future events.

It is worth noting that the analytics maturity model is an integrated model that is not based on the technical aspect and information technology only, but it also includes other important aspects such as data governance and management, data culture and availability, and empowering individuals at different levels to deal with data.

This 7th stage accreditation, which is the highest level in the maturity model, was provided by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), which is concerned with classifying medical applications and systems in health organizations according to their levels of employment and application of electronic information technology systems in the field of healthcare and improving patient experience. KAMC-R underwent a two-day validation process. The roadmap for analytical services, the strategic data plan, and case studies were presented, and a number of operational and medical departments were evaluated. In addition to discussing the infrastructure and technical skills of human resources specialized in data analysis and advanced analytical services such as predictions, machine learning (ML), and deep learning (DL).

This accreditation is evidence of the commitment of the Ministry of National Guard Health Affairs to apply best practices with regard to data and analytical services in terms of: data governance, infrastructure, analytical tools, the integrative relationship between the service provider and the beneficiary, training and qualifying human resources from the technical and non-technical sides. Data and analytics services improve many aspects of the healthcare business such as clinical decision support, operational and financial aspects of the organization, and transform data into actionable insight during the digital transformation journey. This achievement is a first step in a group of achievements and projects that fall under the organization's strategic data plan for the next three years.

MNGHA Receives ISO 22301 Certification

The Ministry of National Guard - Health Affairs represented by Information Technology has been awarded the (ISO 22301) for Business Continuity Management System of core Information Technology Systems as it demonstrates the IT's commitment to providing superior quality services by improving the security and resilience of MNGHA's IT infrastructure, and the various systems and services that it comprises.

The Ministry of National Guard's Health Affairs obtained the (ISO 22301) certificate for the Business Continuity Management System after successfully passing the evaluation process conducted by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). That was to verify its compliance and adherence to all requirements through planning, creating, implementing, operating, and to monitor the business continuity management system. The process also involved conducting the review, maintenance, improvement, and documentation processes to safeguard the productivity, react quickly in times of crisis, reduce the possibility of their occurrence, and opt for the best way to prepare for potential emergencies and minimize the impact of disruption.

It is worth noting that the Ministry of National Guard - Health Affairs attained the (ISO 20000) IT Service Management System and (ISO 27001) Information Security Management System certificates earlier to update and develop its information technology infrastructure to provide optimal services in line with the significant growth towards the digital transformation that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is witnessing.

Two ISO Certifications ISMS and ITSM accreditation

The Ministry of National Guard - Health Affairs represented by Information Services and Informatics Division (ISID) received (ISO 27001) ISMS and (ISO 20000) ITSM, in recognition of its efforts and continuous commitment to the highest levels of excellence in the field of information security and IT service management.

MNGHA obtained the ISO 27001 certificate for the Information Security Management System after its success in passing the evaluation process conducted by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) to verify its compliance with all requirements by setting up security measures that enable the facility to identify and manage information-related risks, which reflects the integrity and reliability of the information technology infrastructure in the facility, in line with the cybersecurity measures and requirements.

Additionally, MNGHA also achieved the highest international standards for best practices for managing information technology services by obtaining the ISO 20000 IT Service Management through raising the levels of quality, automating and evaluating the processes and procedures in the field of information technology.

It is worth noting that the Ministry of National Guard - Health Affairs always seeks to update and develop its information technology systems to provide optimal services in line with the significant growth towards the digital transformation that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is witnessing.

Outpatient Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (O-EMRAM)

Ministry of National Guard-Health Affairs, King Abdulaziz Medical City, Riyadh celebrated the HIMSS Outpatient-EMRAM Stage 7 accreditation on Monday July 8th, 2019. The accreditation was presented by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), which recognizes healthcare organizations that have improved the healthcare services and patient experience by using advanced information technology and electronic medical record systems.

His Excellency, Dr. Bandar Al Knawy, Chief Executive Officer of MNGHA mentioned that “Improving the quality of care and patient safety is among the key strategic objectives of MNGHA. Highly mature health IT technologies assist the organization in the process of reaching those objectives”.

Professor Mohamed Al Moamary, Executive Director, Medical Services added that “Our outpatient services have been greatly enhanced by implementing a highly mature electronic medical record system. We are now able to effectively promote clinical and patient engagement as well as patient education through the patient portal and other health IT technologies”.

Dr. Raed Al Hazme, Executive Director of Information Services & Informatics Division (ISID), MNGHA commented that “O-EMRAM encapsulates several best practices that vastly help in the highly mature implementation of health IT technologies in the organization. By following O-EMRAM guidelines, we were able to increase the maturity of our EMR system and the ancillary IT systems in our environment ”.

MNG-HA has successfully implemented advanced digital information technology and adapted the Outpatient Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (O-EMRAM) in order to improve the outcomes of patient services, quality, and operation of the healthcare services. The main objective of this approach is to better serve the medical staff and patients alike.

For patients, the electronic medical record promotes their engagement with the organization, and in particular, the physician through a mobile application developed by MNG-HA called “MNGHA Care”. The patient can now book appointments, request and print medical reports, request medication refills and check the results of tests such as laboratory and radiology results. For cases that do not require the patient’s visit to the clinic, MNG-HA has developed a mobile application for conducting the clinic visit virtually, through a secure connection. For such specific cases, the healthcare services are provide to the patients at their comfort.

In addition, the Ministry of National Guard - Health affairs has always been keen on the role of health education and its importance in promoting the health of the individual and society through presenting educational messages relating to diseases, women's health, medicines, health calculators and a number of preventive tests. In addition to (My Health) feature, which mainly focuses on the patient’s general health through daily exercise and calories consumption, as well as weight, BMI, and blood pressure and sugar rates.

This accreditation stands as a recognition for MNG-HA commitment with regards to improving the quality of patient care, ensuring safe environment, enhancing the patients’ engagement as well as implementing the best practices and highest healthcare standards.

Ele​ctronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM)

King Abdulaziz Medical City-Riyadh at the Ministry of National Guard - Health Affairs has been awarded Stage 7 on the Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM) by HIMSS Analytics in Europe. With 1,796 beds, King Abdulaziz Medical City joins a prestigious group of healthcare organisations across the globe that are committed to operating in a paperless environment, using advanced analytics to drive transformational change in all aspects of care.

This EMRAM validation enhances King Abdulaziz Medical City’s​ strong record in using information and technology to improve patient care. The organisation has already achieved Stage 7 on the Outpatient Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (O-EMRAM), and Stage 6 on both the Digital Imaging Adoption Model (DIAM) and Infrastructure Adoption Model (INFRAM).

His Excellency, Dr. Bandar Al Knawy, Chief Executive Officer at the Ministry of National Guard - Health Affairs (MNGHA), said, “MNGHA’s commitment to providing optimum healthcare services in an utmost safe environment for the patients is enabled, in part, by innovative health IT infrastructure and solutions. Digital Imaging Adoption Model(DIAM) - Stage 6

KAMC - Riyadh Becomes the First In The World To Achieve DIAM Stage 6

King Abdulaziz Medical City’s commitment to achieving advanced maturity in its imaging IT capabilities is now validated with an international recognition for the attainment of Stage 6 on the Digital Imaging Adoption Model (DIAM). Such announcement came after the visit and the evaluation of both the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Analytics Europe and the European Society of Radiology (ESR) to King Abdulaziz Medical City - Riyadh to view the level of the technical services provided to the users and their effectiveness in improving the quality of medical care services.

The evaluators were briefed on various medical imaging systems including Electronic Medical Record (EMR), Radiology Information System (RIS), Picture Archiving AND Communication System (PACS), Endoscopy Information System (EIS), Vendor Neutral Archive (VNA) and the level of their connectivity. During the tour, residents also reviewed the support systems such as the quality system, early warning, the patient electronic portal, the activation of mobile devices, social networking platforms aiming to provide patient treatment and educational services, as well as advanced data analysis systems.

In this regard, this model presented by HIMSS and ESR aims to assess the infrastructure of medical imaging systems in healthcare facilities and their data safety and documentation. It also aims to assess the extent to which these systems can accommodate various health practices, their scalability as well as the level of information security in the worst of conditions.

Additionally, Professor Peter Mildenberger, European Society of Radiology, pointed out that 42 hospitals have been assessed on the DIAM across the globe, with the average DIAM Score being 3.0, KAMC is well ahead of the curve and its next goal is to attain DIAM Stage 7 within the next six months – together with achieving EMRAM Stage 7.

Director Research and Advisory Services, HIMSS Europe, HIMSS Analytics, Mr. Jörg Studzinski also pointed out that: “ Alongside its Stage 6 achievement, KAMC Riyadh also possesses strong capabilities regarding health information exchange, patient engagement as well as analytics and workflow safety. I am confident they will reach their Stage 7 vision soon.

Furthermore, Information Systems and Informatics Division (ISID) Executive Director Engr. Abdulaziz Al Romaih pointed out that: " This achievement is an important step in the roadmap of the Ministry of National Guard – Health Affairs towards attracting modern technologies to become a milestone in the health industry in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and on a global level. We have rearranged our priorities to reach this goal, and our next goal is to attain DIAM Stage 7, God willing.

Last but not least, Head of Medical Imaging Department at King Abdulaziz Medical City - Riyadh Dr. Ali Al-Wabel said: "We are always looking forward to serving patients as it’s our primary goal in the medical imaging department, including attracting the latest technologies that will help improve the quality of service and ensure patient safety, such as the automation of several procedures, early warning systems, radiation control systems and many more. We also started a scholarship program for Medical Imaging and Health Informatics. He also added: "We are looking forward to working towards more achievements in the next phase".

Imam Abdulrahman Al Faisal Hospital Received Training Accreditation

Saudi Commission for Health Specialties accredited Imam Abdulrahman Al Faisal Hospital in Dammam with the general training center for Saudi Board Program, thus enabling the hospital to submit requests for the recognition of specialty training programs, as the hospital will accept residents starting from Oct 2016.

Dr. Ahmad Al Arfaj, the Regional Executive Director of the Ministry of National Guard-Health Affairs in the Eastern Region pointed out that” this accreditation comes after a series of accomplishments achieved by the hospital, as it is considered one of high quality hospitals that complies with the world developments in regard of training the health practitioners, thus it is considered one of the international training centers”.

He also added” this accreditation is proof of the distinguishing achievements of MNG-HA hospitals in general and Imam Abdulrahman Al Faisal Hospital in particular, as we are really proud of what have been achieved that positively affect the level of the provided medical care for the patients, since they are our main concern at our work”.

The committee took a tour around the hospital where they met the trained and specialized medical staff and they expressed their admiration. Also, the committee were briefed about the hospital workflow, activities, courses, and the mechanism followed by the medical staff in patients care field as they were compared to the standards of fellowship programs accreditations by the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties.

In addition, the Deputy Regional Executive Director of the Ministry of National Guard-Health Affairs in the Eastern Region, Dr. Ahmed Alshoaibi expressed his admiration of this achievement describing it as honorable and deserving achievement. He also added that accrediting the hospital as an appropriate environment for training with high quality standards is pretty proud thing as the MNG-HA has all the potentials to be a training center with high and international standards. The fellowship accreditation for general surgery, internal medicine, and obstetrics is in progress.

Moreover, he said that all the current and future achievements would not be accomplished without the Ministry of National Guards’ support represented by the Health Affairs, King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences and the efforts of the medical staff represented by the directors of the departments and the management of the Academic Affairs.

ISO 9001: 2008 Accreditation

Prince Mohammed Bin Abdulaziz Hospital, part of the Ministry of National Guard Health Affairs in Madinah, achieved a new milestone by receiving the ISO 9001:2008 certification in quality management systems from the global organization "Swiss Cert" through its authorized representative in Saudi Arabia, Ameen Management Consulting Office.

The certification followed a rigorous six-month process involving five key phases: diagnosis, training, documentation, implementation, and internal review. The Food Services Department demonstrated its competence through highly qualified Saudi professionals and advanced operational technologies.

The Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT)​

The Ministry of National Guard Health Affairs has received international accreditation from the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT), recognizing its commitment to the highest standards in cellular therapy and regenerative medicine.

Established in 1996 as a non-profit organization, FACT was founded through a partnership between the International Society for Cell & Gene Therapy (ISCT) and the American Society for Transplantation and Cellular Therapy (ASTCT), with the goal of advancing global standards in patient care and laboratory practices.

ACN Arab Technology Awards

The Ministry of National Guard Health Affairs was recognized as one of the leading institutions in the Middle East by receiving the Arab Technology Award, in appreciation of its excellence in implementing digital healthcare solutions.

The ACN Arab Technology Award is presented by Arabian Computer News to honor outstanding companies, organizations, and individuals in the Middle East who demonstrate leadership in innovation and professional excellence in the field of technology.

SHEA-APIC Partnership in Prevention Award

The Infection Prevention and Control (IP&C) Department at the Ministry of National Guard Health Affairs was awarded first place in the Partnership in Prevention Award by the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) and the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC).

The award was presented to Dr. Hanan Balkhy, Executive Director of the IP&C Department, on March 18, 2010, during the opening session of the 5th Decennial International Conference on Healthcare-Associated Infections, held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Atlanta, United States.

JCI Accreditation​

The Ministry of National Guard Health Affairs received reaccreditation across its three regions from the Joint Commission International (JCI), reaffirming its ongoing commitment to the highest standards of quality and safety in healthcare delivery. As a result, the Ministry was awarded the JCI Gold Seal of Approval in December 2009 with outstanding results.

JCI is an independent international accrediting body that evaluates healthcare institutions based on rigorous and comprehensive standards covering every stage of the patient journey—from admission to discharge—as well as reviewing all administrative aspects to ensure the implementation of best global practices.

KAMC-R (CBAHI) Full Accreditation

King Abdulaziz Medical City-Central Region (KAMC-CR) has recently achieved a new record in the provision of safe and quality care and services as it has been granted full accreditation by the Saudi Central Board of Accreditation for Healthcare Institutions (CBAHI) with outstanding performance and a score of 96.4%. This is in addition to the valid accreditation by the Joint Commission International (JCI) as academic medical centre since March 2016.

On 29 April - 02 May 2018, a CBAHI panel visited King Abdulaziz Medical City-Central Region (KAMC-CR) to conduct a full assessment process that involves a rigorous, transparent, and comprehensive evaluation. In addition, it undergoes an examination of its systems, processes, and performance to ensure that all is conducted in a manner that meets applicable predetermined and published national standards.

The Saudi Central Board for Accreditation of Healthcare Institutions (CBAHI) is the official agency authorized to grant accreditation certificates to all governmental and private healthcare facilities operating today in Saudi Arabia. CBAHI has emerged from the Saudi Health Council as a non-profit organization. The principal function of CBAHI is to set the healthcare quality and patient safety standards against which all healthcare facilities are evaluated for evidence of compliance.

PMBAH - Obtains the American College CAP Accreditation

Prince Mohammed Bin Abdulaziz National Guard Hospital of Al-Madinah al-Monawarah had succeeded of adding a new accomplishment to its national and international accomplishment record, by obtaining the American College accreditation for the hospital laboratories CAP.

The American College of Pathologists (CAP) is a medical facility that serves more than 17,000 physicians and laboratories around the world. It is the largest organization exclusively made up of pathologists and widely accredited as a leading association in the field of quality assurance of medical laboratories.

This accreditation reflects the efficiency of the laboratory by providing high-quality services with the lowest costs that suits the requirements of the accreditation program of the American College of Pathologists. In addition, obtaining the accreditation of the American College of Pathologists requires providing the highest standards of laboratorial services for all patients, physicians, and the general public.

HONcode Standard for Trustworthy Health

As part of its commitment to providing reliable and secure health content, the Ministry of National Guard Health Affairs has obtained the HONcode certification from the Health On the Net Foundation, a non-governmental and non-profit organization established in 1995 under the auspices of the Ministry of Health in Geneva, Switzerland.

The HONcode certification is a leading international standard for ensuring the quality and credibility of medical information published online. It is based on a strict ethical charter designed to build user trust in digital health content by promoting transparency, source clarity, and respect for user privacy.

Through this accreditation, the Ministry of National Guard Health Affairs ensures that its official website adheres to the highest ethical standards in delivering health information. Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI)

Ministry of National Guard Health Affairs Earns QOPI® Certification for Excellence in Oncology Care

The Oncology and Adult Hematology Department at King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh has received accreditation from the Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI®) program, administered by the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).

This program aims to enhance the quality of outpatient cancer care by applying scientifically validated standards and internationally recognized performance measurement tools.

This certification marks a significant achievement, as King Abdulaziz Medical City – Central Region becomes the first healthcare institution in the Middle East and Asia to earn this recognition. It reflects the Ministry of National Guard Health Affairs’ commitment to delivering safe, comprehensive, and high-quality oncology services.
