Define Dislocation and Symptoms

A dislocation is an injury which forces bones out of their sockets. Dislocation is a common sports injury and is usually caused by trauma e.g.  a fall or overextending the limb. It also can be caused by an underlying disease e.g. arthritis. Dislocations temporarily deform or immobilize the major joints, such as the shoulder or ankle, or the smaller joints, such as the finger. A dislocation requires quick medical attention to return the bones to their normal positions.

Symptoms: X-ray film of shoulder joint

  • Pain
  • Tenderness
  • Difficulty to move injured part
  • Swelling
  • Discoloration

What to do when suspecting a dislocation?

  • Call medical help as soon as possible
  • Do not move the joint or try to place it back as it can damage the joint and what surrounds it like ligaments and muscles.
  • If there is swelling apply ice to control it and if skin is cut, carefully clean and bandage with sterile gauze.
  • Sling or splint the injury in its original position until help arrives.
