Department of Hepatobiliary Sciences and Organ Transplant Center
Since the inauguration of the Liver Transplant Program at KAMC in 1994, it has been expanding constantly. Its active staff and the number of cases being treated are continuously increasing. The scope has grown to include surgical operations and medical interventions for liver, gallbladder, and pancreatic diseases. In response to increased demand from healthcare facilities across the Kingdom, the department moved into a dedicated center in 2001.
Services provided by the center
The Center includes an admission suite for investigation, treatment, and surgical operations related to liver cases—such as tumor excision and liver transplantation. It also has outpatient clinics and ancillary services to screen and follow up on referred patients. The Center receives hundreds of medical reports for review and provides consultations to patients and referring centers throughout the Kingdom. It serves as a national reference center for liver disease treatment, with qualified staff specializing in adult and pediatric hepatology, liver transplantation, and pancreatic and hepatobiliary surgery.
The Center has launched several key programs, including liver transplant procedures from brain-death donors and partial-liver transplants from living-related family donors.
