It is a procedure where an x-ray examination is done for the digestive system; stomach and the duodenum.
How to prepare for the examination:
The stomach needs to be empty during the exam. Therefore, you must be fasting for 8 hours at least before the examination.
Note: Pregnant woman should not undergo radiation.
Procedure:
The procedure is done by a specialized radiologist and x-ray technician.
You will change into a hospital gown for the procedure.
The technician will help you stand on the x-ray machine which will move in several directions.
You will be asked to swallow some fizzy tablets or granules which will fill your stomach with gas. It is important not to belch. You may feel a bit bloated, as if you have had a fizzy drink.
You will be given the dye to swallow, it is a sticky liquid.
During the examination you will be asked move or roll over several times to scan the stomach.
You will be required to stay still and follow breathing instructions during the scan.
In some cases, you will be asked to stay for additional tests that the doctor requires.
The duration of the examination:
From the start of the exam it can take half an hour.
Passing the contrast dye:
You need to drink lots of fluids to pass the remnants of dye in your body.
Getting the results:
The doctor will write a report and it will be added to you medical file. Afterwards, you will be scheduled an appointment with the doctor who had requested the x-ray to follow up on the results.
Notes:
You must come on time.
