What is Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)?

It's a way to look inside the body without using x-rays. It uses: a large magnet radio waves and a computer.

How long does a scan take?

Total scanning time usually ranges from 30 to 60 minutes.

Preparation for an MRI scan

At home:

You may eat, drink and take your usual medications.

At the hospital:

  • You'll be asked about your medical history.
  • The scanning procedure will be explained to you.
  • You'll remove any metallic objects, such as jewelry, hairpins, glasses, and nonpermanent dentures.
  • You will change into a hospital gown.

The scan procedure:

There is no need to be frightened. It’s Important to lie still and relax.

Before the scan:

You will be positioned on your back with your arms at your sides.

The scanning procedure:

The scanning table will side into the giant magnet. Your whole body may side through.

During the scan:

You won't feel anything. There is air to breath in the magnet. You may hear some peculiar noises: the hum of the machine; a thump when the radio waves are tuned on and off; whirring grating or other machine noises.

When the scan is finished:

You may go home. A Radiologist (who is a specialist in MRI) will share the result with your physician.
