Echocardiography Laboratory
KACC Echocardiography Laboratory is a state-of-the-art center with a solid clinical excellence and education tradition. It is staffed by board-certified cardiologists, sonographers, and nurses and performs ultrasound examinations of the heart.
What is Echocardiography?
An echocardiogram (echo) is a safe, noninvasive test that uses sound waves to get a detailed picture of the heart.
Your doctor may order an echo study to:
Define the cardiac anatomy.
Identify heart muscle where pumping has weakened because of restricted blood supply or heart attack damage.
Look for any heart defects.
Measure — when possible — pulmonary artery pressures in children with suspected pulmonary vascular disease.
Echocardiography Laboratory Capacity
Facilities include an outpatient and inpatient center at the King Abdulaziz Medical City (KAMC) and satellite labs at Surgical Tower and King Abdullah Specialized Children's Hospital (KASCH). Combined, KACC performs over 35,000 adult and pediatric echocardiograms annually, focusing on providing the highest quality care for our patients and the communities we serve. Our lab is internationally accredited through the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (ESCVI).
Echocardiography Scope of Services
Echocardiography Lab offers the most advanced diagnostic echo equipment and highly trained sonographers and doctors. The lab provides a full range of Adult, Pediatrics, and Fetal imaging modalities including:
2-D and 3-D transthoracic echocardiography (TTE)
Stress echocardiogram
Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE)
Intraprocedural transesophageal echo (TEE)
Transesophageal echo-guided procedures
Fetal Echocardiography (FE)
Congenital Echocardiography
Advanced myocardial strain imaging
Contrast enhanced Echocardiography
Optimization for left ventricular assist devices (LVADs)
Education in Echocardiography Laboratory
Members of the Echocardiography section are actively involved in imaging and education, have active roles in many national organizations and committees, including the Saudi Heart Association and Saudi Society of Echocardiography, and routinely present at national and international meetings.
The KACC echo lab is strongly committed to education. It provides ongoing educational activities, including classroom lectures, weekly didactics, grand rounds, and case conferences. The lab trains the following groups:
Cardiology Fellows meeting Arab board, European and American board requirements for Level I or II training in transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography and stress testing.
Echo Cardiovascular Technology Students: Both ECVT students and Fellows are an asset in the echo lab and are actively engaged in scanning, interpretation and reporting.
