Pediatric Rheumatology Division

Pediatric Rheumatology Division

Pediatric rheumatology is the area of medicine that focuses on diagnosing and treating immune and inflammatory diseases of the musculoskeletal system in kids. This includes more than 200 diseases, such as inflammatory arthritis, systemic autoimmune disorders, auto-inflammatory disorders, vasculitis, soft tissue conditions, and metabolic bone diseases. We at the Division of Rheumatology are committed to giving children with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA), Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, and other rheumatic disorders the most up-to-date and thorough care we can.

Mission of Pediatric Rheumatology

At KASCH, our goal is to give expert, high-quality care to children with rheumatic disorders and unspecified multi-system inflammatory conditions. We also train future pediatric residents for careers in pediatric medicine and do research studies to learn more.

Vision of Pediatric Rheumatology

Our goal is to have a clinical program that works well with a rigorous national fellowship training program for training future pediatric rheumatologists and leaders.

Pediatric Rheumatology Established Clinical Programs

  1. Lupus Program

KASCH's lupus program provides dedicated, team-based pediatric care within the Division of Rheumatology. Through the Lupus Program, specialized professionals at KASCH can help families overcome challenges related to their child's medical care and better navigate the healthcare system. We treat children and teens with:
    • Pediatric Lupus
    • Mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD)
    • Lupus-overlap syndromes
  2. Uveitis Coordinated Care Clinic

Uveitis causes inflammation and can be a potential cause of visual loss in not treated well.
In the Uveitis Coordinated Care Clinic, experts from the Division of Rheumatology and the Department of Ophthalmology collaborate with each other and the family. This has multiple benefits, including:
    • First determine the cause of patient’ eye inflammation, which is often secondary to underlying autoimmune condition such as Juvenile idiopathic arthritis.
    • Streamlining treatment decisions between providers.
    • The potential to produce better visual outcomes.
  3. Immune Dysregulation Program

Inborn errors of immunity are genetic disorders that can appear in various ways in kids, from being more likely to get sick to have a dysfunctional immune system. That can cause hyperinflammation, multiple autoimmune phenomena, lymphoproliferation, and cancer.
It can be hard to make a correct diagnosis with more than 350 different types of immune disorders. Immune Dysregulation Program at KASCH brings together experts in immunology, rheumatology, hemato-oncology, genetics, and other fields who know how to diagnose and treat rare diseases.

  4. Transition care to adult rheumatology

The health care transition is moving from a child/family-centered to an adult/patient-centered health care model.
Transition care in rheumatology will support our goal of providing patient-centered care and optimal health care that is medically and developmentally appropriate.
    Project Summary:
    1. To provide high quality, coordinated, uninterrupted healthcare.
    2. It will be patient-centered, age and developmentally appropriate, responsive and comprehensive.
    3. It will promote adolescent’s skills in communication, decision-making, self-care, self-determination and self-advocacy.
    4. It will enhance sense of control and interdependence in healthcare.
    5. Looking To maximize patients’ life-long functioning and disease control.
    6. To support the parent(s)/guardian of the adolescents during transition and transfer to adult services.

Pediatric Rheumatology Education and Training

MNGAH/KAMC continued to be recognized by the Saudi Council for Health Specialization to be part of the pediatric rheumatology fellowship training, a joint program led by King Faisal Specialist Hospital.
We receive residents from the pediatric training program and other programs in town for rotation in pediatric rheumatology every month.
We continue to provide education about MSK disorders in undergraduates for both females and males at KSAU-HS.

Rheumatology community, Family medicine and Primary health care education

There were several nursing education sessions for outpatient nurses to learn about the biologics and methotrexate that were prescribed.

We regularly give to the monthly pediatric rheumatology club, which is run by the Saudi rheumatology society. We have also attended there to share our center's experiences with doctors from all over the country.
