Pediatric Endocrinology Division
Welcome to the pediatric endocrinology section of King AbdullahSpecialist Children Hospital (KASCH). The Division
has a long history of giving quality clinical care tochildren and teens with a wide range of pediatric
endocrinology and diabetes disordrs. It is actively involvedin basic, translational, and clinical research. The
Division's Fellowship Program ensures that futuredoctors will have a deep understanding of how to care for
patients with a wide range of pediatric endocrinologydisorders.

publications.
Services of Pediatric Endocrinology
The Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes Unit helps kids and their families with diabetes or other endocrine
disorders get diagnosed, treated, and learn more about their conditions. In pediatrics, we see type 1, 2,
and monogenic diabetes, variations and abnormalities of normal growth and puberty, overproduction and
underproduction of thyroid, adrenal, and antidiuretic hormones, bone health problems, lipid disorders, and
obesity. We also have many subspecialized clinics and services, such as those for pediatric lipid disorders,
complex bone, the disorder of sexual differentiation (DSD), diabetes management technology, and long-term
cancer survival. We are a Saudi Council For Health Specialization (SCFHS)-approved pediatric endocrinology
and diabetes training center. We have trained many doctors both inside and outside of Saudi Arabia. Through
a dedicated on-call team made up of a consultant, a fellow, and an in-house resident, we offer inpatient and
emergency room consultation services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We have taken in about 534 patients and
had 573 inpatient consultations in 2020. We also offer services in the daycare unit during the day. These
include diagnostic tests like GH, ACTH, GnRH, and other endocrine stimulating tests and therapeutic
interventions like LDL apheresis, bisphosphonate infusion, and calcium infusions. More than 8,000 people are
scheduled to go to different endocrine and diabetes clinics in 2020, and 564 referrals from other
specialties have been sent our way. Every day, at least one team member takes care of general endocrine and
diabetes cases at the clinics. In addition, we offer virtual clinic services for certain conditions. So far,
more than 1,000 virtual visits have been scheduled through our services.

Subspecialty clinics of Pediatric Endocrinolgy
The subspecialized clinics are designed to manage specific groups of conditions in collaboration with other
needed services.
Lipid disorder clinic (every 1st and
3rd Monday per month Am cover by Dr Aldubayee)
For conditions related to primary and secondary lipid disorders and patients under LDL apharesis. This clinic
also receives inputs from genetics, pediatric cardiology.
Complex bone clinic (every 2nd and
4th Wednesday per month Pm covered by Dr.
Aljuraibah)
For condition affecting bone health, including conditions affecting bone mineral metabolism, primary and
secondary osteoporosis and skeletal dysplasia. The clinic also receives input from physiotherapist,
occupational therapy, genetics and orthopedic surgery.
Disorder of Sexual Differentiation (DSD) Clinic (every
2nd Monday every month covered by Dr. Aljuraibah)
For complex conditions that may affect development of the genitalia in pediatrics, the clinic also receives
input from genetics and pediatric Urology and a wider group of specialist if needed like psychologist and
gynecology. This clinic also receive an input from monthly combined Pediatric Endocrine and Urology
meetings.
DM Technology clinic (every 4th Tuesday and Wednesday
covered by Dr. Almutair and Dr. Babiker)
For pediatric patient on insulin pump therapy with continuous glucose monitoring (CGM). Currently 150
patients on insulin pump and this clinic receives an input from diabetic educator and dietician if needed.
Cancer survivor clinic (every 3rd Tuesday covered by
Dr. Babiker)
This clinic is joint clinic with the hematologist and oncologist, in which we treat and monitor children who
are at risk of having endocrine problems as a result of their underlying tumor/ cancer or as result of its
treatment
Pediatric Endocrinology Community services
Our unit strives to provide continuous community services. On November 14, the unit celebrates Diabetic Day
with patients and their families every year. Many educational and fun activities are held on the first floor
in front of the 710 and 711 clinic areas and on the third floor in the playground area, collaborating with
other specialties.
There are three virtual educational sessions for patients and their families every year. These sessions cover
a wide range of medical conditions, such as how to deal with diabetes when you're sick, how to deal with
diabetes during Ramadan (the month of fasting), how to eat healthily, and how to make sure your child grows
normally.
The unit just put out a booklet for teachers about dealing with diabetes patients at school and gives
teachers tips on how to help medically and emotionally with students with diabetes. Here's a link to the
book.
