Initially commissioned in 2007 as an HDU/Step Down unit to support ICU2 and assist with the movement of intermediate care patients not requiring ICU level care but still too complex for ward level care. As the activity across the Critical Care division has increased over the past ten years, IMCU has grown into a 14-bed General ICU to cope with the demand.
It has staffing and equipment to manage 10 ICU patients and four chronic vent/HDU-type patients. IMCU is also the Code Blue unit for the general medical sector of KAMC, supplying the Nursing members of the Code Blue team.
