The Success of a Surgery to Remove Swelling in The Brain Membranes Endoscopically at Prince Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Hospital in Medina

Prince Muhammad bin Abdulaziz Hospital in the Ministry of National Guard Health Affairs in Medina succeeded in adding a new type of specialized surgery to the record of the hospital’s superior health achievements and capabilities. The medical team, composed of the Sinus and skull Base surgery team led by: Subspecialty ENT Consultant, Rhinology Endoscopic Sinus and Skull Base Surgery, Dr. Bader Alim, in collaboration with the Neurosurgery team, managed to end the suffering of a patient who was complaining of a leaking fluid from one side of the nose, along with a severe headache and constant pain in the head. After taking a medical history, conducting the necessary medical examinations, and using CT and MRI scans, it became clear that there was swelling in the brain’s membranes. It extended from the meningeal membranes to the sphenoid sinus, as a result of which the medical team decided to perform a surgery to remove the swelling of the brain membranes (meningocele) and patch the base of the skull through the nose using advanced endoscopic surgery technology. This operation is the first of its kind at Prince Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Hospital in Medina.

Dr. Bader Alim, explained that this condition is considered one of the uncommon conditions that, thanks to modern endoscopic techniques, has become possible to repair through the nose using an endoscope without the need to expose the patient to the medical risks associated with traditional head surgery and drilling into the skull bone from the outside. The patient was placed in the hospital under observation for several days. Dr. Badr also stated that it has become possible to perform such operations that require the presence of precise devices and materials such as a surgical navigation device and other advanced medical equipment at Prince Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Hospital. Dr. Bader concluded by confirming the patient's discharge in excellent health, heralding a testament to the hospital's commitment to superior medical standards and patient well-being.

For his part, the Executive Director of Medical Services at Prince Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Hospital at the Ministry of National Guard Health Affairs, Dr. Turki Al Wasaidi, confirmed that the medical health care services at Prince Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Hospital with the support of His Royal Highness Prince Abdullah bin Bandar bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the Minister of the National Guard, and under the following up of His Excellency Dr. Bandar Al Knawy, Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of National Guard Health Affairs, and Dr. Saad Al Mohrij, Chief Medical Officer, in a continuous development and tireless endeavor to serve all patients with the latest accredited international medical technologies provided by a group of the best specialized health medical personnel using the most advanced technology in this field.
