Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is a dental specialty that deals with the diagnosis and surgical treatment of diseases, deformities, defects, and traumatic injuries of the soft and hard tissues of the mouth, jaws, and facial structures, and covers both functional and cosmetic aspects.

The scope of maxillofacial surgery ranges from minor to complex major surgeries on patients of different age groups ranging from newborns to the very elderly. It includes dentoalveolar surgery (surgical treatment of disorders involving teeth and their supporting structures) including dental implants, traumatic injuries of the maxillofacial structures, orthognathic surgery (surgical correction of dentofacial discrepancies), maxillofacial pathology including oral cancer, craniofacial defects including cleft lip and palate, surgical and non-surgical treatment of temporomandibular (jaw) joint disorders, salivary gland surgery, reconstructive surgery, and cosmetic facial surgery.

Its services include inpatients (hospital admissions) as well as outpatient clinics, in addition to operating rooms in both the Day Surgery Unit and main Operating Rooms. The division also provides different levels of on-call services around the clock seven days a week. About 300 patients are seen in the outpatient clinics and approximately 15 patients are operated on under general anesthesia every week.
