Intensive Care Neonates

This unit has a capacity of 35 cots, providing 24/7 service to Level 2 Neonates more than and equal to 32 weeks of gestation and more than and equal to 1300grams. Primary diagnosis: respiratory distress syndrome, mild sepsis, anemia of prematurity, mild to moderate hyperbilirubinemia and hypoglycemia, a minor congenital anomaly who are physiologically stable, feeding intolerance, and convalescing neonates from NICU. Care as following is provided:

  • Short-term oxygen therapy.

  • Care of baby of mother with untreated GBS positive and maternal pyrexia.

  • Noninvasive cardiorespiratory monitoring.

  • Assist with invasive procedures ie: lumbar puncture.

  • Assist with retina of prematurity examination .

  • Care of newborn enrolled in Bone Heath Program.

  • Care of newborns receiving phototherapy.

  • Care of newborn undergoing moderate sedation.

  • Enteral feeding.

  • Incubator care.

  • Pre-operative care.

  • Immunization.

  • Health education for parents.

  • Assist and support with breastfeeding.

Level II: Newborn
≥ 32 weeks and ≤ 1300 grams
Age14 years and above ventilated & non-ventilated Burn patients
Hours of Operation: 24 hours / 7 days a week
No of Beds: 35 Beds

Primary Diagnosis

  • Respiratory distress syndrome.

  • Mild Sepsis.

  • Anemia of Prematurity.

  • Mild to moderate hyperbillirubinemia, hypoglycemia.

  • Minor congenital anomaly who are physiologically stable.

  • Feeding intolerance.

  • Babies convalescing from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Primary Procedures

  • Management of common problems of the newborn (i.e. hyperbillirubinemia, hypoglycemia).
  • Short term continuous oxygen therapy.
  • Care of baby of mothers with untreated GBS positive and maternal pyrexia.
  • Non-invasive cardiac, respiratory, blood pressure and oxygen saturation monitoring management.
  • Assist in invasive procedure i.e. lumbar puncture.
  • Assist in retina of prematurity examination.
  • Enteral feeding.
  • Care of newborns enrolled in Bone Health Program.
  • Incubator Care.
  • Care of baby undergoing moderate sedation.
  • Pre-operative Care.
  • Vaccination.
  • Health education for parents.
  • Assist and support with breastfeeding.

Primary patient diagnoses

Pre-terms with weights of 1300 grams and above, newborns from 32-35 weeks gestation, jaundice, mild RDS, congenital malformations with stable cardio-respiratory status, feeding intolerance, babies at risk of infection etc.

  • Routine and Emergency Patient Care

  • Physical Assessment of Newborn

  • Airway Management & Oxygen Administration

  • Non-invasive cardiac, respiratory, BP & oxygen saturation monitoring

  • Gestational Age determination

  • Thermoregulation

  • Medication Administration & Calculation of Medication dosages by body weight Calculation of intake & output by body weight

  • IV Therapy, TPN, & lipids, Blood and Blood Product Administration

  • Newborn Immunization Programme

  • Oral & Gavage Feeding

  • Phototherapy

  • Isolation Procedures

  • Assist in Lumbar Puncture, Bone Marrow Aspiration, Skin Biopsy, Incision & Drainage

  • Blood sampling (Capillary, Venous)

  • Care of Patients on Conscious Sedation

  • Non Invasive Cardiac, Respiratory, BP and Oxygen saturation monitoring

  • Pre & post operative care

  • Accompany infant to off unit procedures, Work-up for chromosomal, metabolic, genetic disorders

  • Promotion of Breastfeeding Programme

  • Falls Prevention Programme

  • Wound, Skin Care, Pressure Ulcer Prevention

  • Pain Management
