Intensive Care

The Intensive Care Department (ICD) was established as a fully independent department in 2004 by the amalgamation of the medical and surgical intensive care units.

The department provides multi-disciplinary critical care services for patients above 14 years, including medical, surgical, and Oncology cases, functioning as a high dependency unit for these specialties.

The services are provided in a 32-bed capacity, 12 beds in ICU 1, 8 beds in ICU 2, 5 beds in ICU 3, and 7 beds in ICU 4) with the total commitment of intensive care physicians and nurses.

Mission:

The mission of the Intensive Care Department is to provide the highest possible standard of critical care medicine for all patients treated in the department and provide cardio-respiratory resuscitation for all adult patients at the King Abdulaziz Medical City (KAMC) - Western Region (WR).

The department is also committed to providing a complete educational opportunity to all trainees in the Saudi Specialization Program (in critical care programs or rotating from other programs) and encouraging them to pursue relevant specialty training programs and embark upon new techniques ensuring the highest standard of patient care.

We are also conducting high-quality scientific research and studies and advances that would bring enormous benefits to the patients of the National Guard and kingdom-wide and International.

With these virtues, we have put clinical care for our patients first and at the same time built a department based on quality and patient safety.

Department Capacity

Intensive Care Unit is operated with commission beds of 32 distributed in 4 Units:
  • ICU 1 = 12 beds
  • ICU 2 = 8 beds
  • ICU 3 = 5 beds
  • ICU 4 = 7 beds
  • ICU Beds occupancy rate in the range of 90 – 100 %
Each patient will be allowed to be visited during the regular visiting hours from 05:00 to 07:00 P.M, unless if the patient is isolated. These patients' information is delivered to the next of kin by the ICU Coordinators, ICU treating physicians via Phones & Virtual Calls to satisfy their needs.



Scope of Services

  • Provide critical care services to adult patients (14 years and above).
  • Provide hospital-wide consultation for patients with acute changes of vital parameters
  • Provide hospital-wide consultation for adult patients with acute and significant changes of vital parameters considered as pre-arrest.
  • The Critical Care Response Team CCRT & Code Blue Team provides 24 X 7 services to all the Medical city vicinity & hospital adult in-patients requiring emergency critical care.
  • Respond and participate in the clinical activities of the hospital trauma team, including(Code Yellow) and major disaster calls.
  • Participation in the medical care for coronary care patients with the Cardiology Section, Dept. of Medicine.






Provides :


  • Full hemodynamic monitoring
  • Mechanical ventilation
  • CVVH and renal support
  • Bronchoscopy, therapy with vasoactive agents
  • Percutaneous tracheostomy
  • Monitoring of ICP
  • Observation of patients receiving epidural anesthesia and analgesia
  • Monitoring of ABG's and other essential monitoring
  • Responsible for ambulance transport of critically ill adult patients to and from the hospital



















Hours of Services

Intensive Care Department provides 24X7 coverage for the indicated services by Intensive Care teams of Nurses, Trainees residents & fellows, staff physicians & Consultants.

  1. Consultants:
  2. Working on weakly session basis to provide 24 X 7 coverage. An assigned consultant in each unit ( ICU1, ICU2, ICU3, ICU4 ) on regular work hours & one consultant to cover all units during after hours & weekends (except in Crisis Mode when each consultant covered his unit during the weekend). As a general rule all patients will be under the on call consultant for each unit acting as the MRP for the week. Consultant Intensivist has the ultimate responsibility of designing the management plan and ensuring its implementation.

  3. Residents & Fellows, Staff Physicians & Asst. Consultants:
  4. Working on 12 – 15 hours shift basis to provide: Coverage of ICU 1, ICU2, ICU3 & ICU4.

    • Triage activities.

    • Consultations.

    • Cover Code Blues.

    • Cover CCRT.

    • Follow up after 48 hours of discharge from the ICU.

    • Insertion of lines & performs other invasive procedures outside the ICU


  5. Nurses:

    Will work on 12hrs shift basis to provide 24 X 7 coverage
