Ministry of National Guard - Health Affairs in collaboration with King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for health sciences are conducting the Ultrasound Boot Camp which will be the biggest Assembly ever in the Middle East from the 3rd till the 6th of May 2015 in the Deanship of Postgraduate Education Building at KSAU-HS, Jeddah
Surgical Track:
Ultrasound for Surgeons
This course has been specifically designed for general surgeons, surgical trainees & other relevant practitioners who would like to become proficient in ultrasound scanning in the surgical environment.
The purpose of this course is to provide a basic core of education and training in ultrasound imaging as a foundation for specific clinical applications.
This course includes didactic sessions in the physics of ultrasound instrumentation and scanning techniques, and clinical applications. The hands-on stations will provide practice in breast, vascular, abdominal, chest, neck as well as interventional procedures including ultrasound guidance with human and phantom models.
The course will orient the provider with the indications for and limitations of FAST – Focused Assessment By Sonography In Trauma. Through lectures, case presentation, and hands-on training, participants will learn how and when to perform a FAST and thoracic ultrasound.
Target Audience
Practicing general surgeons and residents-in-training.
Procedures Track:
Ultrasound-Guided Emergency Procedures
The course is intended to provide an opportunity to acquire and maintain the skills required to perform high-quality ultrasound-guided procedures.
The use of bedside ultrasound by clinicians to guide invasive emergency and critical care procedures has been proven to improve success and reduce complications, and is rapidly becoming established as the standard of care.
Using a combination of live human models and highly realistic simulation task-trainers, participants will have the opportunity to perform the procedures in small groups, with experienced faculty guidance. Course is limited to 30 participants.
The course is divided into two parts: didactic and hands on stations.
Participants have the option of registering for one or both half-day courses.
See below for the skills covered:
- Thoracentesis
- Pigtail Catheter insertion
- Chest Tube Placement, open and Seldinger techniques

Thoracic Ultrasound workshop:
This one day course was aimed as a basic introduction to the use of chest ultrasound in the intensive care setting. The lecture content of the course covered the principles of ultrasound physics and machine optimisation, the technique of chest ultrasound, appearances of pleural & lung pathology, indications and technique of pleural aspiration / drainage. The afternoon section focused on hands-on workshops scanning normal volunteers and ultrasound guided needle technique using phantoms.
Target Audiences:
The course is aimed at Chest physicians, Thoracic surgeons, emergency physicians, General physicians, intensivists and respiratory trainees in respiratory medicine.
FATE focused assessed transthoracic echo. A one day internationally recognised course with full e-learning and practical skills for intensive care and emergency medicine but anyone involved in bedside decision making for the care of the acute patient.
The Course Directors have all been actively involved in teaching echo in more than 20 countries for the past 20 years. This is the first time this programme has been run in Saudi Arabia
Introduction to perioperative transoesophageal echo (TOE). This half-day course will cover the essentials for the non-cardiac anaesthetist or intensivist wishing to use TOE were TTE isn't suitable.
