Rheumatology

Division of Rheumatology

  • Seven Consultant Rheumatologists providing expert care in Rheumatic diseases and allied conditions, in and outpatients, Consultants for patients and referring physicians, and also Consultations to the physiatrists, physical and occupational therapists and orthopedic surgeons.
  • Multidisciplinary approach with the exchange of information with various experts through patient oriented conferences.
  • Regional Hospital with full laboratory and x-ray facility, serving large volume of patients.
  • Supplied via medical school with students, interns, with residency training programs and Rheumatology Fellowship program.
  • Teaching basic and clinical Rheumatology to Fellows, students, interns, residents, nurses and therapist including basic, clinical, laboratory, radiological and clinical pharmacology of antirheumatic drugs and rehabilitation.
  • Continuing education via textbooks, journal clubs and ongoing teaching bedside.
  • Rounds, morning reports and teaching patient care rounds.
    • Preparing Candidates for MD Arab Board and Saudi Board exams.
    • Participating in Residents Selection and MD examinations.
    • Actively participating in General Internal Medicine, patient care and teaching.
    • Fellowship Training Program in Rheumatology.











  • Some of division members are Assistant Professors in King Saud Bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences and participate in lectures, tutorials, student selection and examination.


Rheumatology Scope of Service

The Rheumatology section has seven Consultants and one associate consultant provide care to approximately average over 250 inpatients with rheumatic diseases. The Section serves approximately 900 outpatients per month in Rheumatology.

In the administering of care the following procedures are performed:

  • Various joints diagnostic and therapeutic injection and aspiration.

  • Various soft tissue injection

  • Interpreting various laboratory tests and various x-rays and other diagnostic procedures.

  • Supervise and supply chemotherapy and anti TNF treatment to selected rheumatology patients.

Teaching Activities in Rheumatology

The Rheumatology Section participates in the following teaching activities:

  • Teaching basic and clinical Rheumatology and Internal Medicine to students, interns, residents, fellows, nurses and therapists.

  • Various lectures, tutorials and journal clubs to students, residents, fellows and therapists.

  • Participate in hospital continuing medical education, preparatory courses for Internal Medicine, both theoretical and clinical.

  • Participate in Saudi Journal Club for Rheumatology.

  • Participate in Saudi and Pan Arab academic activities.

  • Participate and chair national conferences in rheumatic disease.

Rheumatology Fellowship

The division started the program in October 2001. It is 2 years training program and our division is also a part of Saudi Board for Rheumatology teaching and fellowship. Since 2008 our training program became a part of Saudi joint Rheumatology fellowship training program that supervised and regulated by Saudi commission of health specialties.

Research Projects in Rheumatology

The division is active in research in different aspects of Rheumatic diseases.

  • The consultant is always present in outpatient clinic.
  • All consultation should be seen by consultant on-call.
