Acute Medical Unit (AMU)

Acute Medical Unit is a 23 bedded unit composed of 21 acute medical beds and two respiratory (negative-pressure) isolation rooms. The unit provides service to Adult (mixed-gender patients admitted under Internal Medicine requiring further observation, diagnostic examination, and management within 72 hours. LOS Hours of operation are 24/7 with a 95%-100% occupancy rate. 

It also allocated two beds for stable EP/IP patients in ECC requiring urgent hemodialysis. The unit provided five beds as EP overflow waiting for Internal Medicine consultations and disposition during activation of ED overcapacity. Patients exceeding LOS more than 72 hours are considered boarding and admitted to in-patient wards.

ECC-AMU nursing care delivery system adapts total patient care utilizing a partnership model to provide a high standard of care delivery. The nursing patient ratio is 1:3 to 1:4, with a flexible staffing ratio depending on operations demand. The staff comprises Registered Nurses and Patient Care Technicians (PCT). The staff is highly trained and certified ACLS providers.

The unit maintains monthly KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) for the patient census; AMU criteria admissions vs. AMU boarding, Hemodialysis tracking, Isolation room utilization, ICU referrals and admission, Sickle cell and DKA patients census, Chronic Vent/BIPAP and Tracheostomy patients tracking.

Patient care initiatives focused on Infection Prevention and Control practices, Hand Hygiene Compliance, hospital-acquired injuries (HAPI) prevention, Pain Management, and Falls Prevention.​
