Medical Imaging - Al Ahsa

The Medical Imaging Department commenced operation with King Abdulaziz Hospital, Al Ahsa, in October 2002. This was the first major facility for the National Guard, their dependents (Military and Civilian).

It was the National Guard's most modern facility, digital state-of-the-art technology in a pleasant working environment from its inception. It incorporates the utilization of advanced equipment and techniques performed by highly trained and motivated staff. Radiologists are fully credentialed appointees of the medical staff with delineated privileges.

Department Capacity

  • Multi-slice (64 and 128) Volume and Dual Source CT Scanning.

  • Digital Mammography with Stereotactic biopsy facility.

  • Ultrasound with Color Doppler and 4D.

  • MRI (1.5-Tesla and 3-Tesla) including MRA and Multiple Specialized Studies.

  • Basic Interventional Procedures.

  • Nuclear Medicine with SPECT.

  • Bone Mineral Densitometry.

  • Lithotripsy.




Scope of Services

  • On average, around 80,000 radiological requests are managed per year.

  • Whilst General radiographic examinations comprise 59.6% of the yearly total (35,042); about 17,000 (28%) patients are examined in the Ultrasound section; 3,176 (5.2%) patients in MRI; 4,852 (8%) patients in CT; 658 (1.1%) patients in Nuclear Medicine and 40 (0.1%) patients in Basic Interventional section.

  • Except for routine Ultrasound and MRI, there is practically no waiting time for the services we provide for all our patients and ALL patients will have their examinations performed and reported prior to any follow-up appointment with the referring doctor. We pride ourselves on this aspect of our service and strive daily to improve on all aspects of patient care.
