Adult Cardiology Ward​ 

Ward 34-ACW provides cardiac care for adult patients with mixed acuity, from high dependency to ward level care and includes cardiac telemetry monitoring. The unit consists of unit with 14 single rooms plus 3 Medical protocol suites.

Patient Population: Adult mixed gender

Hours of Operation: 24/7

No of Beds: 17

Occupancy Rate: 98%

Staff Categories: Nurse Manager, Clinical Resource Nurse, Nurse Coordinator, Staff Nurse I & II, Patient Care Technician.

Primary Diagnosis:

  • Acute Coronary Syndrome

  • Heart Failure without the need for Mechanical Ventilation

  • Post Cardiac Arrest for monitoring without need for Mechanical Ventilation

  • Valvular Heart Disease

  • Disease of the Aorta and Pericardium

  • Adult Congenital Cardiac Disease

  • Cardiac rhythm abnormalities requiring continuous monitoring or TPM / PPM, AIC insertion

  • Patients diagnosed with NSTEMI with / or without Acute Pulmonary Edema

  • Pre and Post Percutaneous Coronary Intervention with arterial or / and venous sheath

  • Anticoagulation (INR) Management (for arrhythmia / valve prosthesis)

  • Infective Endocarditis


Primary procedures:

  • 24 Hour Bedside or Telemetry Monitoring

  • Non-invasive ventilation: Nasal Mask, Full Face CPAP / BIPAP

  • Venous, Arterial, PICC, CVP / ART Line Management

  • Trans-esophageal Echocardiography (Assist)

  • Percutaneous coronary intervention care

  • Arterial and Venous Sheath Removal

  • 12-Lead ECG (Performance and basic interpretation)

  • Cardioversion (Elective and Emergency-assist)

  • Pleural Aspiration (Assist)

  • Chest Tube Insertion (Assist and Removal)

  • Transcutaneous Pacing (Emergency)

  • Administration of vasoactive infusions

  • Administration of thrombolytics

  • Pericardiocentesis (Assist)

  • Moderate Sedation

  • Hemodialysis (Nursing Care provided by HD staff)

Primary patient diagnoses

  • Acute Coronary Syndrome (Post MI angina, or Equivalent) without NTG Infusion

  • Coronary Artery Disease (For Medical & Surgical Interventions)

  • Congestive Heart Failure; Pulmonary Edema

  • Valvular Heart Disease for Valvuloplasty, Valve Repair or Replacement.

  • Asymptomatic Cardiac Arrhythmias (SVT, AF) exclude Bradycardia with Trifasicular Block and Syncope

  • Pre & Post Electrophysiology Study, Ablation, Pacemaker &AICD Implantation

  • Pre & post Cardiac Catheterization (Angiography)

  • Pre & Post Cardiac Catheterization (Angioplasty) with angioseal or post Arterial Sheath removal.

  • Post Open Heart surgery (third postoperative day)

  • Preparation of patients for open heart surgery

  • Stable post myocardial infarction for 72 hours.

Procedures

  • 24-Hour bedside or telemetry Monitoring and 12-Lead ECG

  • Emergency defibrillation and cardioversion.

  • Thoracentesis, Abdominal paracentesis & Drainage.

  • Pacemaker management and transcutaneous emergency pacing

  • Central Venous catheter insertion, management and removal.

  • Enteral Feeding via nasogastric or gastrostomy tube

  • Tracheostomy care and management.

  • Blood Transfusion Management.

  • Care of PICC lines.

  • Pre & post AICD care and management.

  • Pre & post Cardiac Catheterization care & management.
